Painting 41 of #100daysofbritishfloraandfauna is a Scotch Argus. I’m going to hunt for these guys up in moors and grassland once July rolls in. I think they are still caterpillars munching at the moment 🐛As usual it’s painted with watercolour paint then a little finishing touch of gouache and watercolour pencil ✏️
Painting number 39 is a colourful Jay. These guys are one of favourite from the corvid family. This jay was a wee bit tricky to paint so im going to file this one away for further study and a repaint on some good watercolour paper. I need to work out how to capture that pink grey plumage and maybe add a wee bird mohawk that the jay sometimes sports
Having a break from my recent earthy brown palette to paint this brilliantly blue kingfisher. I’ve never seen one although I’m always on the look out when wandering past riverbanks. It seems I’ve been looking for the wrong sized bird. They’re only the size of a sparrow and for some reason I thought they where larger🤷♀️🦅 Also they have to eat a lot! 60% of their body weight a day to survive! Imagine how much sushi you would have to eat if that ratio applied to humans!
Number 36 of 100! I’ve only got 11 butterflies left on my list to paint. That’s left me with quite a few spaces to fill but I’m not sure what group of creatures to pick next!? Moths, beetles, fish? Time to do a little researching🤓
My #100daysofbritishfloraandfauna project is still going. It might be progressing at a glacial pace but thats still progress! Today is a grey heron created using a mess of gouache and pencils. There are so many of them around my area, staggering about like socially awkward dinosaurs 😆🦖 but they do look rather magestic in flight
It’s a good thing I never get round to cleaning my paint palette because it had all the muddy colours I needed for this wee common toad! Sometimes there’s a benefit to being a little messy!
Back to trying to crack this old chestnut! I started this 100 day project with the intention to create a little nature painting everyday for 100 days. But I’ve got way side tracked by other things so now I’m just going to aim for 100 paintings without the time constraint. It’s no fun when I set too many rules on my creativity anyway! So here’s to a 100 at some point project!! 😅
I had to dig out my white acrylic gouache for painting no.26. It turns out painting a white butterfly is hard! I do love the orange tips on the wings. It makes them easy to spot in the wild. ⠀
